Who I help / Policy review

A policy you cannot explain is a subscription, not protection.

You signed something. The agent was lovely and has since vanished. You have paid faithfully for four years and could not tell anyone what it pays out, or when.

WHAT THE SURVEY FINDS

What a review usually turns up

  1. 01

You are covered for the wrong event

A large death benefit and no critical illness cover, on a thirty year old whose realistic risk is a decade of lost earnings rather than an early funeral. The policy is not defective. It was simply never matched to the person.

  2. 02

A rider lapsed and nobody mentioned it

The part that actually pays while you are alive is frequently an add-on. Add-ons get dropped to keep a premium affordable, and it is not always the policyholder who notices that it happened.

  3. 03

The fund is not doing what you assumed

A variable plan invests. Which fund, at what charge, and with what performance are all questions with real, printed answers. Most policyholders have never once been shown them.

  4. 04

Your life moved and the policy did not

It was sized for a single twenty seven year old. You are now married, with two children and a mortgage, and the cover has not shifted by a single peso.

AFTER THE SURVEY

What the review is, and what it is not

Bring the policy, from any company, including a competitor’s, including one of mine. I will read it properly and tell you in plain language what it pays, when it pays, what it excludes, what it is costing you, and whether it still fits the life you are actually living now. A meaningful share of these reviews end with me saying the plan is sound and you should keep it. That earns me nothing, and it is the entire reason the review is worth taking. Surrendering a policy is very often the wrong move, and anyone who tells you to cancel and replace within ten minutes of meeting you is churning you for a commission.

WHAT GETS DRAWN

Six things a plan can hold. You will not need all six.

Which of these end up in your drawing is decided by what the survey turns up, not by what I would like to sell.

  • Income protection

If your income stopped, this is what keeps the rent paid and the tuition current while the household works out what happens next. For a breadwinner it is the first thing we size and the last thing we cut.

  • Health protection

Critical illness and hospitalisation cover that pays on diagnosis. The whole point is that the money arrives before the bills do, so nothing has to be sold in a hurry at the worst possible time.

  • Retirement planning

Run your actual SSS figure and most people go quiet for a moment. This is the fund that closes the distance between that number and the life you had been quietly assuming.

  • Education planning

Tuition arrives on a date you already know and it does not negotiate. Funding it deliberately is the difference between a plan and a scramble.

  • Investment planning

Long term, pointed at a goal you can say out loud. Not a tip, not a flip, and not something you feel you have to check every morning.

  • Existing policy review

Bring whatever you already own, from any company. I will read it properly and tell you what it does, what it does not, and whether it is worth keeping. Frequently it is, and that conversation costs you nothing.

SAID OUT LOUD

Policy review, honestly

Will you just tell me to cancel it and buy from you?

That practice is called churning, it is bad for you, and it is a large part of why people distrust this industry. Surrendering an in-force policy usually means eating the early charges you have already paid and then re-qualifying at an older age and a worse health rating. Sometimes replacement genuinely is right, and when it is, I will show you the arithmetic rather than assert it. Most of the time the honest recommendation is to keep what you have and plan around it.

It is not a Sun Life policy. Will you still look at it?

Yes, and I will not be strange about it. A review is a review. I would rather you left understanding a competitor’s policy than left still confused by it, because the person who finally explained it to you is the person you will call when your situation changes.
